Two fossilised whale skeletons, estimated to be around 10 million years old, were discovered on a beach in Portugal. The skeletons were found during excavation work after storms exposed fossils. A team of palaeontologists from various institutions conducted a complex excavation operation. The fossils are significant for understanding the evolution of whales and the marine environment of the Miocene era. The skeletons will be studied at the Lourinhã Museum, and a cooperation protocol is being established for research and community engagement.
