Aristides de Sousa Mendes, a Portuguese diplomat, defied his government's orders during World War II to save approximately 30,000 refugees from the Nazis. His courageous actions led to severe consequences, including the loss of his job and economic decline for his family. Despite initial ostracism, Mendes was posthumously honored for his bravery, and efforts are underway to ensure his legacy is included in Portugal's educational curriculum.
