The Bertelsmann Stiftung Transformation Index (BTI) reveals that 56% of surveyed countries are now governed autocratically, with a record high of 77 countries classified as autocracies. Despite this, there are signs of resistance and democratic renewal, particularly in Poland and Brazil. Poland's government under Donald Tusk has initiated reforms to strengthen democratic institutions, showcasing a counter-movement against authoritarianism. However, the report warns that the erosion of democratic institutions is often initiated by elected governments themselves, and rebuilding trust and stability is a slow process.
