The future EU commissioner for defence and space, Andrius Kubilius, emphasized the need for increased defence spending, proposing at least €10 billion by 2028 and a total of €200 billion over the next decade for infrastructure upgrades. He highlighted the threat posed by Russian President Putin, arguing that EU members must show military readiness to deter aggression. Despite the need for increased funding, many NATO members are not meeting spending commitments. Kubilius called for a long-term EU budget increase to support these defence priorities.
