NATO member states must increase joint purchases and utilize existing infrastructure to avoid a potential 3.7% GDP defense spending increase. Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the need for collaboration and innovation to reduce costs, citing Ukraine's radar system experiments. Currently, only 24 of 32 NATO members meet the 2% GDP defense spending target, which Rutte believes is insufficient for future security. The US President-elect Donald Trump has called for a 5% target, which has faced resistance from some EU countries. A decision on the new target is expected at a summit in The Hague in June.
