Marine biologist Bastien Mérigot from the University of Montpellier is working on a project called DolphinFree to communicate with dolphins using a bio-inspired acoustic beacon. This device emits sounds in the frequencies dolphins understand to help them avoid getting caught in fishing nets, which have caused many dolphin deaths since 2016, particularly in the Bay of Biscay.
