New DNA analysis reveals that the relationships among victims of the Vesuvius eruption in Pompeii were misunderstood. Notably, a group once thought to be a family was found to consist entirely of males with no biological connections. Additionally, a scene previously interpreted as a maternal embrace was also re-evaluated, showing at least one male and no maternal ties. The research, involving scientists from the Max Planck Institute, Harvard University, and the University of Florence, highlights the diverse backgrounds of Pompeii citizens and their eastern Mediterranean ancestry.
