Portugal is experiencing one of its worst wildfire seasons, which has led to misinformation about immigrant benefits. A viral Instagram post falsely claims immigrants receive €910 in benefits while volunteer firefighters receive nothing. In reality, immigrants must meet specific criteria to qualify for benefits, and volunteer firefighters earn a stipend of €75 per day. The League of Portuguese Firefighters criticizes this pay as insufficient. The narrative blaming immigrants for low firefighter wages is misleading, as benefits are unrelated to public sector salaries.
