French Prime Minister François Bayrou estimates that dozens, not thousands, died from Cyclone Chido in Mayotte, with a confirmed death toll of 35. Local prefect François-Xavier Bieuville initially feared higher casualties but now believes the figure will be corroborated. The cyclone, the worst in 90 years, devastated the territory, leading to a national day of mourning and calls for more aid. Survivors faced severe shortages of water and electricity.
