The concept of storing energy underground, particularly in porous rocks, presents a promising solution for the energy transition by utilizing surplus renewable energy. Researchers from Portugal have demonstrated that this method could potentially store significant amounts of energy, enough to power medium-sized cities. However, regulatory challenges remain before this technology can be implemented in practice.
