Shackleton died in 1922 in Grytviken, South Georgia, during his fourth expedition. His crew built the Hope Cross in his honor, which was later replaced by a concrete monument in 2018. The new memorial is now displayed beside RRS Discovery and will be open to the public after a rededication ceremony.
