Az EU diplomatái a Bizottság eredeti javaslatához ragaszkodva elutasították az Európai Parlament azon módosításait, amelyek egy évvel elhalasztják az új erdőirtási szabályokat. A jogszabály célja az erdőirtás elleni küzdelem azáltal, hogy kötelezettségeket ír elő a nyersanyagokat importáló kereskedőkre. Az Európai Néppárt által támogatott parlamenti módosító indítványok azon országok besorolására törekedtek, amelyekben nem fenyeget az erdőirtás, de a tagállamok elutasították azokat. Az erdőirtási törvény a nagyvállalkozások esetében 2024. december 30-án, a kisebbeknél 2025 közepén lép hatályba.
EU diplomats have rejected amendments from the European Parliament to delay the new deforestation rules by one year, insisting on the original proposal from the Commission. The legislation aims to combat deforestation by imposing obligations on traders importing raw materials. The Parliament's amendments, supported by the European People’s Party, sought to classify countries with 'no risk' of deforestation, but were dismissed by member states. The deforestation law is set to take effect on December 30, 2024, for large enterprises, and mid-2025 for smaller ones.
