The European Commission plans to establish a regional firefighting hub in Cyprus to assist in combating wildfires exacerbated by climate change, particularly in the Middle East. President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the need for tools to tackle increasingly severe wildfires, following significant damage in Europe this summer. Cypriot officials had previously proposed this hub, which aims to enhance firefighting capabilities in the region. The initiative follows a devastating wildfire in Cyprus that resulted in fatalities and extensive property damage.
