The European Commission has launched an investigation into allegations that Hungarian secret services attempted to recruit EU employees in Brussels as informants. Reports suggest that agents posed as diplomats and targeted Hungarian staff at the Commission. The Commission is taking the allegations seriously and will set up an internal group to investigate. Concerns have been raised about the involvement of Olivér Várhelyi, the current European Commissioner for Health, during a period of strained relations between Hungary and the EU. The European Parliament has not commented on the matter, while experts express concern over the implications for trust among Hungarian EU staff.
