The Atapuerca hills in Burgos, Spain, have revealed skeletal remains dating back 5,700 years that show signs of cannibalism, including cut marks and evidence of cooking. Researcher Antonio Rodríguez-Hidalgo states that cannibalism was more common in Neolithic Iberia than previously thought. The remains of 11 individuals, including children, suggest a violent episode of war cannibalism rather than survival cannibalism. Atapuerca has become a key site for studying prehistoric cannibalism, with discoveries spanning nearly a million years. The site gained international recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
