Finland has officially closed its Salmisaari coal power plant, achieving a coal phase-out four years ahead of schedule. This transition, driven by a surge in wind energy and supportive government policies, has reduced coal's share in the energy mix to less than 1%. The move is expected to lower electricity bills and enhance energy independence. While the closure is celebrated, campaigners urge further action to ensure a fully fossil-free power system, emphasizing the need for scalable renewables over biomass and delayed nuclear projects.
