The town of Yelets, south of Moscow, presents a stark contrast between its winter beauty and the grim realities of war. While the town showcases Orthodox churches and ice fishermen, it is overshadowed by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, marked by recruitment billboards and murals honoring local soldiers killed in action. Residents like Irina express confusion and hardship due to rising costs and the impact of the war, yet some still support the military efforts. The economic strain is palpable, with businesses struggling under increased taxes and utility bills. As the war drags on, the mood is one of resignation and uncertainty about the future.
