German customs officials seized approximately 1,500 young tarantulas hidden in chocolate sponge cake boxes shipped from Vietnam to Cologne Bonn airport. The discovery was made due to an unusual smell, leading to the revelation of the tarantulas in plastic containers. Many did not survive the journey, raising concerns about animal welfare. Criminal proceedings are ongoing against the intended recipient for customs violations. This incident highlights a trend in insect smuggling for profit in Europe.
