Germany faces a skilled worker shortage as retirees leave the workforce and young candidates are scarce. To address this, the country is increasingly recruiting workers from India. Handirk von Ungern-Sternberg, initially with the Freiburg Chamber of Skilled Crafts, has started an agency, India Works, to facilitate this process. The number of young Indian workers in Germany has grown significantly, with many motivated by better job prospects and wages. Local businesses, including butchers, have benefited from these new recruits, while the German economy requires a substantial influx of foreign workers to sustain its workforce.
