In 2022, three students from the Technical University of Munich founded a startup called HopfON, which utilizes hops waste from the beer-brewing process to create sustainable building materials. Their innovative approach addresses the significant waste generated in the construction industry, aiming to reduce emissions and save farmers money. The startup has developed products like acoustic panels and thermal insulation, with plans to expand their offerings and incorporate other organic materials. Researchers in Bavaria are also working on new hop varieties that produce less waste without compromising quality.
