In 2024, global executions reached a decade high with 1,518 executions, a 32% increase from 2023. Amnesty International reported that Iran, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia accounted for 91% of known executions. The death penalty is illegal in Europe, except for Belarus. Many executions are believed to occur in China, North Korea, and Vietnam. Despite the rise in executions, only 15 countries carried them out, the lowest on record. Some countries, like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burkina Faso, are moving to resume or reintroduce the death penalty.
