The Committee of Permanent Representatives has prepared a Council decision to eliminate checks at the internal land borders with Bulgaria and Romania starting January 1, 2025, attributed to Hungary's EU presidency. The interior ministers of Austria, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria have concluded that there are no obstacles to Romania's and Bulgaria's full Schengen membership. The decision is expected on December 12. The researcher, Bernadett Petri, emphasized the significance of this advancement, noting the long wait for Bulgaria and Romania's Schengen membership and the challenges faced due to illegal migration. The new agreement includes a multinational police contingent to secure external Schengen borders. Petri also highlighted the pressures on the Schengen zone due to EU mismanagement of migration crises. She remarked on the importance of ensuring the Schengen system's functionality and the influence of upcoming elections on migration policies in Europe. Teljes cikk (Magyarnemzet)
