Michael McGrath, the Commissioner-designate for Democracy, Justice and the Rule of Law, emphasized the need for uniformity in combating violence against women during his confirmation hearing. He mentioned the EU's recent directive aimed at addressing violence against women and domestic violence, which, however, did not classify rape as a Euro-crime due to lack of consensus among member states. The directive aims to unify laws across the EU, but the criminalization of non-consensual sex remains contentious. MEPs stress the importance of consent-based definitions of rape and the need for ongoing efforts to strengthen women's rights. Teljes cikk (Euronews.com)
