In 2024, irregular border crossings into the EU have decreased to a three-year low, with over 239,000 crossings reported by Frontex. The central Mediterranean route saw a 59% drop, while the Western Balkans experienced a 78% decrease. This decline is attributed to EU support for North African authorities and alignment of visa policies in the Western Balkans. However, concerns remain about undetected crossings, the treatment of asylum seekers, and ongoing dangers in migration. Despite the overall decrease, some regions, particularly the Canary Islands and eastern borders, have seen increases in irregular crossings.
