Oregon congress members are urging President Trump to cancel a plan to cull 450,000 barred owls over 30 years to protect native owl species. The lawmakers, led by Rep. Troy Nehls and Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, argue the plan is costly and ineffective, estimating it could exceed $1.3 billion. The barred owl, an invasive species, has displaced native spotted owls, prompting the controversial culling strategy. The plan, set to begin in spring, aims to kill over 2,400 barred owls this year, ramping up to 15,500 annually by 2027.
