Legendary avant-garde composer Sofia Gubaidulina has passed away at 93 in Germany, where she lived for over 30 years. Blacklisted in the Soviet Union in 1979, her work eventually gained recognition in the West for its blend of modern music with spiritual themes. Born in Chistopol, Tatarstan, she studied in Kazan and Moscow, where she was mentored by Dmitry Shostakovich. Gubaidulina's compositions faced condemnation and bans, but her breakthrough came with the violin concerto Offertorium, premiered by Gidon Kremer in 1981. She moved to Appen, Germany after the Soviet Union's collapse. Teljes cikk (bbc.com europe)
