Lee Jae-myung, the liberal opposition candidate, was elected president of South Korea amid political turmoil following the brief martial law imposed by former President Yoon Suk Yeol. With 49.3% of the votes, Lee's victory reflects public frustration with conservatives. He aims to address poverty and corruption while maintaining alliances with the US and pursuing pragmatic diplomacy, despite challenges from North Korea and trade policies. Lee's background as a former child laborer and his contentious political history shape his image as a reformer, though critics label him a populist.
