The French justice minister, Gérald Darmanin, expressed concerns about the negative image this incident creates for France. The stolen items include a necklace given by Emperor Napoleon to his wife and a diadem belonging to Empress Eugénie. Experts warn that if the thieves are not caught within 24 to 48 hours, the stolen jewellery may be broken up and sold.
