Olzhas Suleimenov is a pivotal figure in Kazakhstan's history, known for his literary contributions and activism against nuclear testing. Born in 1936 in Almaty, he led the Nevada-Semipalatinsk movement, linking Kazakhstan's nuclear tragedy with that of Nevada. His work, AZ i Ya, reinterpreted Slavic and Turkic history and sparked significant debate. Suleimenov's efforts contributed to the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site on August 29, 1991, which is now recognized as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests.
