Yerlan Akkenzsenov, the Kazakh Minister of Energy, stated that the recently signed document establishes 'the principles' of an agreement to increase Russian oil exports to China by 2.5 million tons annually. While a full feasibility study is not yet completed, preliminary calculations are available. The Atasu–Alasankou pipeline is a crucial route for Russian oil, with a current agreement allowing 10 million tons to be transported to China through Kazakhstan. The transit fee is approximately 4600 HUF per ton. Russia is shifting focus to Asian markets, with China and India becoming key buyers post-Ukraine war. Kazakhstan aims to enhance its role in Eurasian energy routes while ensuring its own oil exports remain viable.
