Ireland has reported a case of a new strain of mpox, linked to a patient returning from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This strain, clade Ib, is more contagious and severe, particularly affecting children. The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a global health emergency in August 2024.
