NATO chief Mark Rutte criticized Russia for a malfunctioning submarine spotted near France, highlighting the diminished Russian naval presence in the Mediterranean. He humorously compared the situation to a Tom Clancy novel, emphasizing NATO's readiness to defend against potential threats. The Russian Black Sea Fleet denied any malfunction, claiming the submarine was following navigation rules. Concerns about aging vessels in Russia's 'shadow fleet' and environmental risks were also raised.
