A Turkish court sentenced hotel owner Ahmet Bozkurt and architect Erdem Yilmaz to 18 years and five months in prison for negligence leading to the collapse of the Isias Grand hotel during a 2023 earthquake, which killed 72 people. Bozkurt's son received a 17-year sentence. The hotel was hosting a volleyball team from northern Cyprus when the quake struck. Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Unal Ustel criticized the sentences as too lenient, despite some accountability for the tragedy. The earthquake resulted in over 50,000 deaths and significant destruction in Turkey and Syria. Teljes cikk (bbc.com europe)
