Pope Francis' body was transferred to St Peter's Basilica for a three-day lying in state before his funeral. Thousands of mourners are expected to pay their respects. He opted for a simplified funeral, choosing to be buried in the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major instead of the Vatican grottoes. The updated funeral rites aim for greater public participation while maintaining traditional elements. The funeral is anticipated to attract global religious and political leaders.
