Portugal is constructing Europe's first dedicated drone carrier, the NRPD João II, designed for unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater operations. The 107.6-meter warship, built by Dutch company Damen in Romania, is set for delivery later this year at a cost of €132 million. It offers high functional flexibility for various missions, including environmental monitoring and maritime surveillance. The vessel can accommodate a crew of 48 and additional specialists, with capabilities for long autonomous operations. The project aims to enhance Portugal's maritime security amid rising hybrid threats.
