In 2022, road accidents in the EU resulted in 20,653 deaths, marking a 9% increase since 2020 and a 3.6% rise from 2021. The highest fatality rates were in Alentejo (Portugal), southern Aegean (Greece), Ionian Islands (Greece), and Oltenia (Romania). Urban areas reported lower rates, with Stockholm, Vienna, and Berlin having the lowest. Despite recent increases, road fatalities have decreased in over 80% of EU regions over the last decade, with the most significant decline in Norra Mellansverige (Sweden).
