The number of prisoners in Russia has decreased by over 180,000 in five years, partly due to convicts being recruited to fight in Ukraine. As of now, there are 282,000 prisoners, a nearly 40% drop from 465,000 in 2021. The decline is attributed to army recruitment, more suspended sentences, and other punishments. Prisoners returning from the front have increased crime and social tension. Additionally, thousands of inmates are working to support the army's wartime economy, producing goods worth significant amounts.
