A new study estimates that the world's largest corporations have caused $28 trillion in climate damage, with 10 fossil fuel companies responsible for over half of this figure. The research aims to hold companies accountable for their pollution, similar to past tobacco lawsuits. The study, led by Christopher Callahan from Dartmouth College, uses emissions data to trace climate damage back to specific companies, demonstrating that major emitters can be linked to significant temperature increases. Despite the robust methods used, no climate liability lawsuit against a major carbon emitter has yet succeeded.
