The tomb of former Syrian dictator Hafez al-Assad was set on fire following the uprising that ousted his son Bashar al-Assad. Reports indicate looting of the presidential palace and the toppling of Assad family statues. The elder al-Assad ruled with an iron fist for three decades until his death in 2000, succeeded by Bashar, whose violent crackdown on protests led to a 13-year civil war.
