In January, a migrant boat was rescued off the north African coast after 14 days at sea, resulting in the deaths of 50 people. Fadi Gujjar, a people smuggler from Pakistan, was implicated in the tragedy, having falsely promised safe routes to Europe. Survivors reported brutal treatment during the journey, leading to several deaths from violence, starvation, and dehydration. Gujjar's online presence and operations were documented by BBC Verify, revealing his connections and the dangerous smuggling routes through Mauritania.
