Judicial officials in Turkey denied an appeal for the release of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu from jail during his corruption trial. Imamoglu, a significant opposition figure against President Erdogan, was detained on March 19 and jailed on corruption and terrorism charges, leading to widespread protests. His detention is viewed as politically motivated ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. The Istanbul Criminal Court rejected appeals from Imamoglu's lawyers and others arrested alongside him.
