The UK has agreed to hand over control of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ensuring the continued operation of the US-UK military base on Diego Garcia. The deal includes a €120 million annual payment to Mauritius for leasing the base for 99 years. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the importance of the base for national security, while critics express concerns about the loss of British territory and the rights of former island residents. The agreement faced legal challenges but includes provisions for a trust fund for Chagossians and resettlement efforts.
