A Ukrainian mobile operator, Kyivstar, has begun testing satellite internet that connects directly to cell phones in partnership with SpaceX's Starlink. This service aims to provide internet access in areas lacking traditional coverage, especially crucial during wartime. Kyivstar's CEO announced that Starlink-powered connections will be available by mid-2026. Despite its benefits, the use of Starlink has faced criticism, particularly regarding Elon Musk's threats to cut off service unless Ukraine negotiates with the U.S. Alternatives to Starlink, such as Eutelsat and the IRIS2 project, are also being explored in Europe.
