Col. Susannah Meyers, head of the US military base in Greenland, was fired after sending an email distancing herself from Vice-President JD Vance's criticism of Denmark. The Pentagon cited a 'loss of confidence' in her leadership. Vance criticized Denmark's support for Greenlanders and suggested annexation for security reasons. Following Vance's visit, both Greenland and Denmark opposed US annexation. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized Denmark's military presence in the Arctic and the importance of collaboration with the US.
