The EU has been criticized for weakening its climate leadership after adopting a 2040 emissions target that requires a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels. While the target aims to support the EU's goal of climate neutrality by 2050, experts argue it lacks ambition and clarity, particularly regarding land use and forestry. Concerns have also been raised about the use of international credits to meet emissions targets, which could undermine domestic reductions. The EU's approach may risk delaying necessary transitions away from fossil fuels.
