Pneumonic plague is a severe lung infection caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which can spread through infected droplets in the air or from other forms of plague. Recent concerns arose following the death of a researcher in Russia, but tests have shown no immediate threat of pneumonic plague transmission. While it remains a serious public health concern, effective antibiotic treatment is available if administered early.
