Shahed-type drones, particularly the Geran-2, have been extensively used by Russia in its invasion of Ukraine since February 2022. These drones, often referred to as 'mopeds' due to their noise, are produced domestically in Russia and have increased in number and capability over time. The Geran-5 variant, introduced in May, features advanced specifications and can carry significant payloads. Despite EU sanctions, many components for these drones still come from European firms. Ukraine has been enhancing its air defense systems to counter these drone attacks, achieving a high interception rate.
