A new analysis reveals that postpartum women face a significantly higher risk of depression and psychosis after childbirth. The risk of depression increases by 20% in the weeks following delivery, while the risk of psychosis is six to seven times higher in the first five weeks. The study, based on data from 1.8 million births in Sweden, highlights the vulnerability of new mothers and suggests that while mental health diagnoses decrease during pregnancy, they rise postpartum. Notably, women are less likely to be diagnosed with anxiety or substance abuse during this period. The findings emphasize the importance of monitoring mental health in new mothers.
