Zimbabwe has abolished the death penalty after President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed a law commuting sentences of around 60 death row prisoners. Amnesty International praised this as significant progress and a milestone in ending cruel punishment. Other African nations are also moving towards abolition, but have not yet enacted laws. Mnangagwa has opposed capital punishment since 2017, citing his own experience with a death sentence during the liberation war. Globally, 113 countries have abolished the death penalty, with Amnesty recording a rise in executions in 2023. Teljes cikk (Euronews.com)
